Ford's new green-er engine isn't a hybrid

Kudos for Ford for taking the lead and rolling out a new generation of advanced gasoline engine technology. The move is fresh evidence that Detroit has more mileage boosting tricks up its sleeve than you may have guessed. The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Ford is set to unveil a new internal combustion gasoline engine that takes a big leap forward in gasoline engine efficiency.

It's not some new advanced hybrid. Rather the engine combines a pair of off-the shelf technologies of the sort long called for by auto experts such as the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). Called EcoBoost, Ford's advancement combines turbo-charging and direct fuel injection technology to achieve up to 20% better mileage. The first model to get the green treatment will be the 2009 Lincoln MKS (photo).

Stocks to buy: Blue Star, Ruchi Soya, Simplex Infra, Kalyani Steels

Kotak Securities has a ‘buy' rating on the central air-conditioning systems major Blue Star, as it feels it will report handsome earnings growth over the next two years (CAGR of 78% between FY07 and FY09). The company being in a position to offer the best requirement for central as well as commercial refrigeration equipment enabling it to maintain a leading market position in this segment, remains one of the key reasons for its bullishness.

The brokerage also feels that the stock is a play on structural themes like IT/ITeS and retail. However, the brokerage warns that appreciation in the rupee and slowdown in IT/ITeS services remain key concerns. Kotak calculates that at the current price, BSL is trading at 25.1x and 19.3 times FY08 and FY09 earnings, respectively, and on a forward EV/EBITDA basis, the stock is trading 12.6 times.

High court ruling on 401(k) suits to be tested in Charleston

It is estimated that 50 million employees have $2.7 trillion invested in 401(k) plans.

Two lower courts, including the U.S. District Court in Charleston, disallowed LaRue's complaint. The Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments last year.

In their ruling the justices agreed that LaRue, who lives in Texas, could sue to recover not only his losses but any profits he would have earned from that money.

"It's a very, very big ruling, and actually it's more than I could have personally hoped for," said Greenville attorney Robert Hoskins, who helped represent LaRue in the appeal.

Hoskins said the original case will 'go back to square one,' to where it was filed. 'What will happen is we will end up back in Charleston,' he said.

LaRue filed the case in 2004 in federal court in Charleston, where DeWolff Boberg was incorporated and once had an office.
