Giving orang asli youth skills training

TANGKAK: The Johor Education Foundation (YPJ) has launched an aggressive move to attract as many orang asli youth to take up skills training courses next month.

A team, led by Muar and Batu Pahat community college chairman Abdullah Omar, has started making visits and giving talks to a community of Temuan orang asli near Gunung Ledang.

Abdullah said the programme was aimed at providing work skills to orang asli youth who did not have proper education to help them improve themselves.

"The community colleges in Johor have been providing work skills such as electrical wiring, air-conditioning repair, sewing and even tailoring to youth for several years.

"However, we now want to push the programme to the orang asli youth," he said in Kampung Tanah Gembur on Thursday.

Abdullah said the settlement, headed by Tuk Batin Jengking Jani, had about 66 families living in 52 homes located at the foothill of Gunung Ledang near Bekok.

He said initial checks with the community showed many of the youth either worked as contract labourers with daily wages or were self-employed.

He said the community of about 300 residents who owned cars or motorcycles and mostly lived in homes powered by generators could benefit if there was a certified electrical wireman or mechanic among them.

He said besides installing or repairing electrical wires, those with motor mechanical knowledge could repair vehicles while the girls could become tailors and sew dresses.

Misadventures in Atlanta

It's the disappearing act some people pull when they start dating. What's so unfortunate about it is that Jordan is actually a part of our group. It's not as if he's some guy she just recently met who has to go through the awkwardness of meeting us! He's already in!

Naturally, if you go from single to being in a relationship, some of your priorities are going to shift. Maybe your Saturday nights have been reassigned to your new beau. And maybe one of your weeknights, too. But there are five other nights (plus weekends!) in your schedule! Is a couple hours a week too much to ask for friends who have been there for you?

And it's not just women who act this way. My friend James and his girlfriend (also both within our social circle) have fallen off the face of the earth since they became exclusive almost three months ago.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander LS 4WD Review

Does Mitsubishi have an identity crisis? When its name is mentioned, some people think of SUVs, like the Montero, while others think of the Lancer Evolution high-performance rally replica.

If so, the company is working hard to blend the best of both sides of its reputation. With its second-generation 2007 Outlander, Mitsubishi has merged an SUV with a rally car. A wild claim? You'd be forgiven for thinking so, as performance and handling are not usually associated with a crossover SUV. But the new Outlander, which shares little besides the name with the original, previews the chassis platform that will underly the next-generation Lancer Evo, and its four-wheel drive system is meant more for traction and cornering on pavement than traditional four-wheeling. In the crowded and competitive mid-size, middle-class crossover field, the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander stands out by virtue of its sporty abilities.

CCISD ponders schools' future

CORPUS CHRISTI — Three possible bond dates. Four possible bond options.

Corpus Christi Independent School District trustees Friday learned scenarios for a possible multimillion-dollar bond election within the next year and a half to renovate facilities.

The district's chief financial officer, R. Xavier Gonzalez, presented bond-package options for $70 million, $95 million, $116 million and $166 million. While taxpayers wouldn't see an increase with the first three options, they would with the $166 million plan.

Board President Bill Clark said the presentations, which also included a look at the district's student population, will guide discussions on financing possibilities.

"We're seeing a migration to the Southside," he said. "That could mean addressing facilities there and consolidating other campuses."

While trustees and Superintendent Scott Elliff said Friday's preliminary discussions were the first step at looking at needs and financing them, Gonzalez also presented three dates for when a bond election could be presented to taxpayers: May 10, 2008, Nov.
