The current theories (now coming into question) of the inferior treatment of girls in the schools were, in the main, authored and promoted by Harvard's Carol Gilligan, whose papers, written between 1982 and 1990, were followed by a cascade of articles written by popular writers embracing Gilligan's assertions. At the same time as the Gilligan studies were being published and re-published, a study at the University of Michigan was showing that between 86 and 88% of the students (male and female) were happy, and unaware of the "accelerating downward spiral" cited by Gilligan and her colleagues.v,vi,vii Newer studies (1995-98) are beginning to cast more doubt on Gilligan's research. Even Gilligan has expressed some new ideas which seem to modify her previous position, and she more recently (1996) stated the "boys show a high incidence of depression, out-of-control behavior, learning disorders, even allergies and stuttering".

Tories demand Salmond quit as MP
However, the First Minister later announced he would be donating the one-third of his Holyrood salary to which he is entitled as a so-called "dual mandate" politician to a special trust fund to help community projects in the north-east of Scotland. It means that when his First Minister's salary of £76,907 a year is added to his £60,277 Westminster wage, Mr Salmond's total annual income is £137,184. A spokesman for Mr Salmond yesterday accused the Tories of "scraping the bottom of the barrel" and ignoring the Scottish national interest. "There is a clear advantage to Scotland in having a First Minister who can make key interventions at Westminster on Scotland's behalf," the spokesman said. "For example, on the UK Government's legislative programme or, for that matter, his exchanges with the Prime Minister on co-operating against terrorism." He added: "There is much more to being an MP than trooping the lobbies at Westminster, as is shown in the latest available league table for MPs' participation.

Just when things were beginning to cool off, things are heating back up at Tamuning Elementary School. A total of 36 out of 46 classrooms are currently without the services of functional A/C."I told the board I'd challenge them to come to my school, sit in my class and watch my teacher give a lesson, because it's so hot," said Student Body Association president Geawna Hernandez. The outspoken fifth grader had approached the Guam Education Policy Board during its meeting last night, voicing her frustrations. The student says teachers are conducting classes outside because the heat has become unbearable, adding that she doesn't want to return back a modified bell schedule.She explained, "It's really hot and I know that not all of the kids like school, but I kind of like school and I don't want to go back to the 12 o'clock schedule anymore.
