Evidence of industry 'greening' at AIME 2008

A strong showcase of environmentally friendly products at the tradeshow for the business events industry next month is further evidence of the rapid 'greening' of the industry. Leading the charge is the event itself, AIME 2008, held in Melbourne on 19 - 20 February, which has announced it will be Australia's first Climate Neutral(tm) exhibition.

The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, an exhibitor and the event's venue, will showcase its new Melbourne Convention Centre, which is the first convention centre in the world to have achieved a '6 Star Green Star' environmental rating.

Some of the environmental features include a black water recycling plant, solar panels, energy saving controls on lighting, and having smart air conditioning.

Another leading international venue to feature at AIME, the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, also has an extensive environmental program.

ComEd plans to push efforts that cut bills

ComEd customers may pay more for new conservation programs but could save in the long run, consumer advocates and the utility said Thursday.

The Illinois Commerce Commission, which regulates ComEd, has approved energy efficiency programs proposed by ComEd, downstate utilities and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Different programs will roll out at different times. They include discounts on energy efficient light bulbs; the pick up and recycling of older, inefficient refrigerators; air conditioning "tune ups" and other measures designed to reduce energy consumption.

ComEd said consumers overall could save roughly $155 million during the lifetime of the programs, possibly up to 10 years. That could save 1.2 megawatts of power, or enough to power 140,000 homes for one year, ComEd spokesman John Dewey said.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Internazionale

But then a new chapter starts: a better manager: more money: real success with a decent team: the hateful arrogance of twenty years ago re-surfacing : THE POSSIBILITY OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE AT ANFIELD. AAAAGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! So what's a Manc to do? Enjoy and gorge on the vast and immediate pain, or pray for a little more drawn-out suffering that a win and renewed hope might bring El Beard? Am I a would-be executioner or torturer?" Meanwhile Barrie has calmed down. "Yoga is a wonderful thing," he lies. "I'm interested to hear your take on things at Anfield. Since you seem to think Rafa is for the chop, who would be your preferred replacement?" Why you're in any way interested in my opinion is beyond me, Barrie; I should refer you to the second paragraph of this report. Though since you're asking, and seeing the Reds need someone with the nous to antagonise and destabilise a nearby larger and richer arch-rival...

TransAdelaide plan for fewer seats on our trains

TransAdelaide general manager Bill Watson has written to a disgruntled commuter who complained about a train carriage with reduced seating that has been on trial for six weeks.

His letter to Seacliff Park commuter Ivan Winter says: "Standing room, especially in peak periods, is the reality of all public transport systems in all major cities."

Mr Watson said replacing the decks of three seats along one side of Carriage 2103 with decks of two seats, did not cut the carriage's capacity because standing room had been increased.

"My immediate reaction to that is that it is outrageous," Mr Winter said yesterday.

"We ought to be developing and improving our public transport. Instead, what we're seeing from the operator is they are degrading it .

PennFuture Calls on State Legislature to Pass Clean Energy Bills to ...

But unlike California, our existing laws have created a detour on that road. We can only get to those green jobs by getting our legislators to act to remove the roadblocks." Van Jones is an environmental leader and civil rights attorney whose presentation tonight is sponsored by the Urban Sustainability Forum. Jones is the founder and president of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland, CA, which promotes integrated solutions to urban America's toughest problems: social inequality and environmental destruction. Jones is promoting a national green-collar jobs initiative to create "green pathways out of poverty," while greatly expanding the coalition fighting global warming. PennFuture, which is about to mark the tenth anniversary of the organization's founding, is a statewide public interest membership organization that advances policies to protect and improve the state's environment and economy.
