Cyclist, truck collide near OHSU

Twenty five years ago I was an avid bicycle enthusiast and rider. I realized how dangerous it is to mix cars and bikes and gave up bicycle riding on the public streets. It is just not worth the risk. Proponents of bicycles as a major transportation choice are deluding themselves. How many of our fine City workers go about their daily business on bicycles? Save for a few bike cops and the like, the rest of them use motor vehicles to conduct business. The idea that the rest of us are somehow supposed to commute to work on bicycles is irrational thinking. Painting boxes and lines on the roadways just encourages more people to use this dangerous and inefficient form of transportation and does not provide enough safety. Bicycles are regressive, not progressive. Doing the wrong thing harder never works.

Conservation can carry load

The Dept. of Energy (and other government agencies, and most economists) live in la la land, where "demand" magically creates supply. Once upon a time a group of economists were thrown in a dungeon, with no food. They were worried, until one of them said: "Let's create a free market here between us, and supply each other with sandwiches". Sorry, but the "invisible hand" is about to slap us in the face. The planet is round, i.e., finite, and endless "growth" is an impossibility. BTW, note that the article did not suggest shutting down the nuke plant - but predicted that electricity prices will rise significantly regardless. A rising price is how supply and demand meet: demand will be depressed to meet available supply. Same as is now happening with oil.Posted: Thu Nov 15, 2007 11:23 am .

District gives more answers on $25.8M proposal

Wellsville Central School District officials heard two years ago about $1 million in EXCEL (Expanding our Children's Education and Learning) Aid from the state and started looking into a capital project proposal. Through a building conditions survey, tours of facilities and many meetings with the Community Advisory Committee and the input of staff, architect and construction manager, the project grew into a $25.8 million proposal. It includes state building aid of 93 percent (for about 95 percent of the project) and the district can use $746,327 in EXCEL Aid. The local share will be about $2,269,509. The average annual tax impact from the 15 years of the project debt retirement on a $40,000 home would be $38 per year for a homeowner without a STAR exemption, $9 per year for someone with a STAR Program exemption and $0 per year for someone with a Senior STAR exemption.

Not so much.

7:18: Kurt Lowder still works for MTV? Didn't he like found that channel or something?

7:24: Marilyn Monroe , Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera arrived! I love watching the girls try to get out of the superhigh SUVs in their tight dresses. Better them than me.

7:29: Jennifer Lopez looks like a mummy -- wrapped head to toe. Truth be told, she is so glam. I could never pull most of that off.
