Contractor emerges as charity's Champion

Vandals destroyed the heater at the American Red Cross' headquarters on Sixth Street in Modesto last week, sending a shiver through the charity, but things began to warm up again Tuesday.

Champion Industrial Contractors Inc. of Modesto donated the $2,500 deductible the Red Cross would have had to pay to replace the heating and air conditioning unit, said Rebecca Ciszek, executive director of the Red Cross's Stanislaus County chapter. Then the contractor installed a $5,702 replacement unit. The balance will be covered by insurance.

By early afternoon, the place was heating up. "The classroom is nice and warm," Ciszek said about 1 p.m. "It took a little while because that room had been cold now for a week."

The donation means the organization won't have to dig into its charity funds to fix the unit, Ciszek said.

Wrigley Field would get new neighbors under developer's proposal for ...

A Chicago developer unveiled plans in the city's Wrigleyville neighborhood Wednesday night for a nine-story, mixed-use development with a hotel that would stand virtually eye-to-eye with Wrigley Field.

Representatives for developer Steven Schultz, who owns land across the street from the ballpark at the north end of the block bounded by Clark and Addison Streets and Sheffield Avenue, met with community members and Ald. Tom Tunney to seek support for the project.

Schultz wants to build two nine-story buildings connected by a four or five-story base, with a Hyatt Place hotel on the Clark Street side and residences at Addison and Sheffield. The hotel would have about 135 rooms, and the other building would contain about 150 rental units. There also would be about 100,000 square feet of commercial space on the land, plus a health club and 500 parking spaces.

The last Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is under construction in ...

Bush looks more like the base of a large building than the bottom of a sleek warship. It’s a sight not many people see — not even most of the thousands of workers who have labored on the ship during the past six years in advance of the Oct. 7 christening.

Based on unprecedented access to the shipyard for the past six months, this special section takes the rest of us under, over, inside and out, to tell the story of the 10th and last Nimitz-class carrier — and some of the workers building it.

Tomkins FY pretax 262.6 mln stg, up 7.3 pct; sees challenging year ...

(adds reaction, amends spelling of CEO James Nicol's name) LONDON, Feb. 21, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Engineering group Tomkins reported a 7.3 pct rise in pretax profits of 262.6 mln stg for the year to Dec 29, after new products and a focus on emerging markets helped offset economic weakness in US car and construction markets. Sales from continuing operations were 2.94 bln stg, down from 3.13 bln in 2006, it said, and the adjusted operating margin was 9.0 pct against 9.4 pct the year before. Adjusted operating profits, which exclude disposals, fell 11 pct to 264.7 mln. Net debt was 296.8 mln stg, against 403.0 mln in 2006, and the company said it is considering a share buyback of 5-10 pct. CEO James Nicol said the group, which makes components for cars and air conditioning systems and building products such as baths and windows, delivered a good performance after taking a number of 'self-help' measures to counter headwinds in its US automotive and construction end-markets.
