Mass. foreclosures rise 128% in January
Nearly 800 foreclosures were recorded in January, the highest number of Bay State homes lost during a single month since August 2007, the Warren Group said today. The Warren Group of Boston is a provider of local real estate data and the publisher of Banker & Tradesman. There were 799 foreclosure deeds in January, up 128.3 percent from the 350 deeds in January 2007, the firm said, and January 2008 also marks the highest number of deeds during any month since August 2007, when there were 1,018. Auction announcements in January reached their highest number since the Warren Group began tracking them in 2005, the firm said, and there were 1,792 announcements in January 2008, up 77.8 percent from the 1,008 in January 2007. Petitions to foreclose, the first step in the foreclosure process, also increased in December, signaling that Massachusetts problems with foreclosures are far from over, the Warren Group said.
Board approves service plan for HVAC system
The Forrest City School Board on Monday agreed to enter into a contract with a local company to try and ensure that the new HVAC system at the high school works properly. Following some discussion on the matter, the districts board agreed unanimously to a one-year maintenance contract with Store Services Inc., of Forrest City for a base price of $6,480. The contract requires SSI to perform quarterly maintenance on the system. Board member Ernestine Weaver was absent. The other bidder was Mohr Heating and Air Conditioning of Wynne. Architect Dave Hodges, who works with the school district on the HVAC system, explained to the board that a separate maintenance contract, in his opinion, would benefit the district. Basically, you would hire someone to get really familiar with the system and to check quarterly to make sure everything is working properly, said Hodges.
Fayette County man drops out of 9th District race
A Fayette County Democrat who said he was upset with U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster's voting record has decided not to challenge him for the 9th District seat and instead is endorsing the incumbent.Robert "Ted" Pritchard, 56, Fairchance, said Tuesday that he has to withdraw from the race because of health and personal issues. He said he spoke with Shuster and will be supporting him, not his would-be Democratic primary challenger, Tony Barr, of Blair County.
When he announced his candidacy at the end on January, Pritchard said he was upset that the 47-year-old Republican congressmen voted against the Clean Air Act and a minimum wage increase. He also said Shuster should have introduced legislation to combat the energy crisis.After speaking with the lawmaker, Pritchard said he changed his mind."Personally (Shuster and I) see eye to eye on things," he said.
