| Deep Throat revealed
They're intended to provide readers with a quick glance at the facts of the story, but they also repeat information from the headlines. Is there a better way to use these elements? Rob McDonald's story about North Central science teacher Randy James would have been a perfect opportunity for video. We've recently equipped photographer Colin Mulvany with a video camera, and we're still learning how to take advantage of this resource. Here's a sample of his work on another story (requires high-speed connection). Speaking of Colin, what a great shot he got of Mt. Spokane High School's Angel Urann sliding into third base. The Web doesn't do justice - pick up the print edition and take a look. Coming up today: -Mayor West attended the annual leadership prayer breakfast this morning.
Taking down The Dean
The Daily Howler, who's long chronicled the Bush team's co-option of Washington pundits, is on a roll today. It's a brutal takedown of the sanctimonious David Broder, often lionized as the dean of Washington pundits. Point-by-point, the Howler's Bob Somerby shows how Broder pandered to and misjudged Bush even as he was unfairly trashing Al Gore. Broder at last saw the light this week, though he suggests nobody could have known how lawless and reckless Bush would turn out to be back in 2000. Right. And still, The Dean, who thought Bill Clinton should resign for evading the truth about a sex act, does not call on a self-described unconstitutionally acting, lawless and reckless president to do the same. No right-wing conspiracy is necessary with tools like Broder around. I hope someone sends him this piece.
IdleAire to eliminate 40 positions
IdleAire Technologies Corp. announced Thursday it was cutting 40 positions in a move expected to save the Knoxville-based company $4 million a year. Half the jobs are currently vacant and will not be filled, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing did not provide details on which positions are being eliminated. IdleAire spokesman John Doty declined to comment Thursday because of SEC restrictions while the company is considering going public. The company has not said when it plans to go public, how many shares of stock will be offered or at what price. In its SEC filing, the company said its reorganization will include consolidating various departments and functions, although it did not offer details. Employees affected by the cutback will receive a severance package based on their job and longevity with the company and job placement assistance, the company said.

Gazans Feeling Recoil of Attacks on Israel
When the fighters came one morning last month, the Wahdan family pleaded with them to think of the Israeli return fire that the rockets often drew. "There are women in the house, there are children," Wahdan recalled telling them. "You run away, but if the Israeli planes come, where do we go?" But the gunmen went on as planned, the Wahdan family said. When the fighters came back that afternoon to launch rockets that had failed to fire the first time, Khadra, Mohammed's 54-year-old mother, was rolling dough in the kitchen. She ran out to shout at the fighters. Khadra made it to the gate of the family courtyard when an Israeli shell hit. Shrapnel killed her and the family's 15-year-old hired farmhand. "Her last words were, 'Go away,' " Mohammed Wahdan said.
